Editing & Critiques for Writers

With my 25 years of background in professional writing & editing, I'm happy to offer critiques & editing services to kidlit nonfiction & informational fiction authors, both pre-published & published.

Manuscript Critiques & Mentoring

Are you an aspiring or early career kidlit writer who's been working on a nonfiction or informational fiction manuscript for a while? Maybe your critique partners (CPs) have offered opposing opinions on it, or an agent or editor says it's just not quite there, or you've tried it a dozen ways and just feel stuck?

This is the perfect time to seek out a professional critique. For me, a professional critique means getting a fresh, experienced eye on your story—someone who knows the craft, the genre, and the industry and can offer specific insights to steer in you in the right direction toward a sub-ready, sellable manuscript.

My professional manuscript critiques are much more than just quick and standard feedback! They're more like a blend of typical critique, developmental editing, and a coaching session with me.

Each critique/mentoring package for your manuscript includes:

  • an in-depth editorial letter covering relevant story issues (structure, arc, theme, character, etc.) and marketability

  • in-line comments and edit suggestions in Word, as needed

  • mentoring about picture book writing strategies, through feedback and email correspondence, as needed

  • a second look/in-depth feedback on your revision

  • lots of warm encouragement!

I take time and care with every critique—my goal is to offer you specific, encouraging feedback

that will help you get your story to sub-ready!

My current rate for a comprehensive critique of a nonfiction or informational fiction picture book manuscript—up to 1,800 words (plus up to two pages of back matter) & including a second look feedback round (which most clients find extremely helpful!) and ongoing email mentoring through the process—is $425.

If you don't need the second look feedback, my current rate for a single round of feedback is $295. And I accept payments pre-critique via PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or check.

Please contact me for availability. Once we've connected on a timeframe, please send payment and email me your manuscript in Word. I so look forward to working with you and helping your story shine!

Manuscript Editing

Are you a published and/or self-publishing author who needs more formal developmental editing on your nonfiction or informational fiction story? I'm happy to do this as well!

I enjoy working in close collaboration with authors to help you get your story, voice, and structure clean, clear & ready for publishing. As a developmental editor, I dig into your story and make direct revision suggestions, which may include rewriting, moving elements around, and adding elements for story & structure. (When you're finished with my editorial suggestions, you might still need a proofreader, depending on project length/scope, but you will definitely have a solid manuscript!)

For these projects, I usually work on an hourly rate—my current rate is $125/hr—and I can give you an estimate of hours once I see your manuscript.

Please contact me to discuss your project—I look forward to it!

What Writers Are Saying About Working with Meeg

"Meeg has a brilliant instinct for weaving perfect pacing, tension, and heart to thread an engaging narrative. Her detailed feedback is always spot-on!

She has a knack for articulating problems in my manuscripts that I knew existed but had trouble pinpointing. A critique from Meeg is worth every penny and more!"

- Lindsay Metcalf, author of Farmers Unite!, Beatrix Potter, Scientist & more

"With working on my first children's book, I knew the message I needed to send but Meeg knew the rhythm and tempo it needed to be in. I knew my idea was gold but when I wrote it out, there was something not quite right.

When I approached Meeg to help me with the text, it was a match made in heaven. I felt like she made a good book into a great one. It was a breeze and an honor to work with Meeg Pincus!"

- Genein Letford, M.Ed, Intercultural Creativity® Speaker & author of I am Creative

"I just finished reading over your edits and am so amazed by how skillfully you identified the subtle changes that will profoundly impact the clarity of my message.

Your ability to keep the content aligned with my ideals and allow the writing style to remain true to my voice were exactly what I was seeking in an editor.

Thank you so much for your support on this project. Your positivity and enthusiasm are a gift. I am so grateful you said yes to this!"

- Christy Ana Zahava, author & healing professional

"Meeg provides truly exceptional manuscript guidance.

She has an amazing ability to cut through a story with laser focus get to the very heart of it. She really helps hone in on the theme, provides astute and actionable suggestions to amplify its power and message, and gives the best guidance to help craft a compelling, informative and meaningful narrative. Her critiques are so valuable for the “big picture” and for more granular elements as well.

I highly recommend working with Meeg as an amazing investment to elevate a current work-in-progress and to have Meeg as a voice in your head for future work."

- Ali Bovis, author of the Sylvie chapter book series

"Meeg got my manuscript and me as a writer to where I wanted. She's a keen editor who saw the core of the story and provided clear guiding steps that helped me bring it out.

I feel more solid in my writing and on my path towards being a children’s book creator after working with her."
